Product Description

A strainer insulator (also called an end/corner strain insulator) is a fence component that does two jobs at once: it electrically insulates the fence wire from the post, and it mechanically anchors the wire under tension. It's used specifically at end posts, corner posts, and gate posts — the points on a fence line that carry the highest mechanical load — where wires experience the most cumulative strain from multiple spans. Using a standard clip-on insulator at these high-stress points instead of a proper strainer insulator is a common installation mistake that leads to sagging wire and premature failure.

How it works
Installation involves threading a support wire through one hole to anchor to the post, then threading the fence wire through a second hole and tying it off — this lets the insulator carry the tension load while keeping the electrified wire fully isolated from the (grounded) post, preventing current leakage and short circuits

Technical Specifications

Specification Typical Detail
Type End / corner / high-strain insulator
Material UV-stabilized plastic, glass-reinforced polyester, or polycarbonate
Wire compatibility Polywire, polytape, galvanised wire, and rope — typically up to 7–11 mm depending on model
Strain rating Medium-strain (semi-permanent, low stock pressure) to high-strain (permanent, high-tensile fencing)
UV resistance UV-coated/stabilized for prolonged outdoor sun exposure
Mounting location End posts, corner posts, gate posts — points of maximum mechanical tension
Function Combines electrical insulation with mechanical wire-tensioning in one component
Corner capacity One strainer can typically carry tension through no more than two corners; each friction point (corner, bend, dip) reduces tensioning capacity
Recommended spacing Strainers/tensioners generally placed every 1,500–2,500 ft along high-tensile runs, plus mid-span between corners
Color Most commonly black; also available in green, white, red
Pack sizes Sold individually or in packs (commonly 5, 10, 25, or 100-count)
Compatible post types Wood, metal (T-post), or plastic posts

Key Features to Highlight

  • Dual function — insulation + mechanical strain-holding in a single part, simplifying corner/end assemblies.
  • Weather resistance — engineered to hold structural integrity and insulation performance across extreme heat, coastal salt-air corrosion, and harsh winter conditions.
  • Wear protection — smooth internal surfaces let the line pass through or sit securely without the wire, tape, or rope being worn down by sharp edges or wind movement.
  • Arc/short protection — good insulator design reduces arcing and shorting risk at the strain point

Best suited for

Any electric fence installation with end assemblies, corners, or gate posts — particularly high-tensile permanent fencing for livestock containment, game fencing, and security perimeters, where wire tension needs to be maintained over long runs without sagging.
